The Magic of Campfire Cooking

There’s something uniquely magical about cooking over a campfire. The fresh air, camaraderie, and fragrant smoke all combine to create an experience unlike any other. Every summer, we host a special activity called “Outdoor Cooking,” where campers learn to whip up delightful meals that are as fun to prepare as they are to eat. From Foil Stew Dinners to sweet treats that get everyone involved, our outdoor cooking sessions are highlights of the summer.

Why Outdoor Cooking?

  1. Teamwork and Collaboration: Cooking together fosters a spirit of cooperation. Campers learn to work as a team, share ideas, and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
  2. Connection to Nature: Preparing food outside brings us closer to nature. It’s a reminder of the simple joys and the beauty that surrounds us.
  3. Creativity: There’s no limit to the culinary creativity at camp. Using fresh ingredients and various spices, campers can experiment and discover new flavors.

So, let’s dive into some recipes that capture the essence of campfire cooking. These dishes are perfect for a night under the stars or for reminiscing about your time spent at Kennolyn.

  1. Foil Stew Dinner

One of our most beloved traditions at Kennolyn Camps is the Foil Stew Dinner. Each camper gets to create their own customized tin foil pack, filled with ingredients that reflect their personal tastes while spending the night under the stars with their cabinmates. Here’s our recipe, but you can always make it your own!

Ingredients:

  • Aluminum Foil
  • 1 large potato per two people.
  • 1 carrot per person
  • 1 lb ground meet for 4 people or meat substitute (Beyond Meet Crumbles)
  • 15 oz Tomato sauce
  • 1 onion per 4 people
  • 1 celery stick per person
  • Salt, pepper, Tabasco to taste
  • 1 finely chopped clove of garlic

Other, non-standard issue Kennolyn ingredients to add to your foil stew at home:

  • Italian Seasoning or basil, oregano, sage
  • Mexican Seasoning or chili flakes, cilantro, lime juice

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Gather your chosen ingredients and prepare them. Slice the potatoes and vegetables, and cut your protein into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Create Your Pack: Tear off a large sheet of aluminum foil. Layer the potatoes in the center, followed by vegetables and protein. Drizzle with olive oil or add a pat of butter, then season generously with salt, pepper, and any other spices you love.
  3. Seal the Pack: Fold the foil over the ingredients, sealing it tightly to prevent any leaks. Make sure it’s well-closed to keep all the flavors inside.
  4. Cook Over the Fire: Place your foil pack on the campfire’s hot coals or grill grate. Cook for about 45-60 minutes, turning occasionally, until everything is cooked through and tender.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Carefully open the foil pack (watch out for steam!) and dig in. Enjoy this delicious meal while sharing stories with your friends.
  1. Campfire Nachos

Switch up your campfire snacks with delicious Campfire Nachos! This cheesy, crunchy treat is perfect for sharing and is incredibly easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • Tortilla chips
  • Shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend)
  • Toppings of choice (jalapeños, black beans, olives, diced tomatoes, etc.)
  • Salsa and sour cream for dipping

Instructions:

  1. Layer the Nachos: On a piece of aluminum foil, spread a layer of tortilla chips. Top with shredded cheese and your favorite toppings.
  2. Wrap It Up: Fold the foil around your nachos to create a packet, ensuring it’s well-sealed.
  3. Cook: Place the foil packet over the fire or on a grill grate for about 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  4. Dig In: Carefully unwrap and enjoy your cheesy nacho creation with salsa and sour cream on the side!
  1. Campfire Pizza

Why not turn your campfire into a pizzeria? Campfire pizzas are not only easy to make but also incredibly customizable.

Ingredients:

  • Pita bread or flatbread
  • Tomato sauce
  • Cheese (mozzarella is a favorite)
  • Toppings of choice (pepperoni, veggies, etc.)
