In the Santa Cruz Mountains, right off of Highway 1, Kennolyn hosts an Easter Egg Hunt that the whole family really can enjoy. The creative Egg Hunt set up ensures that all kids feel welcome and successful. Older kids and parents can enjoy free refreshments and the feeling of peaceful escape in this gorgeous location surrounded by redwood trees and a sweeping view of the Monterey Bay.
When my siblings and I were young, my parents would arrange an elaborate Easter egg hunt inside our house each year. We would wake up to find a note about the eggs that were hidden around the house and the fact that we were each to collect only the eggs that had our corresponding stickers on them, so we would all have equal numbers to find. The note showed our four names and a single sticker next to each. Then we were off to hunt for plastic eggs, digging under couch cushions, climbing up to reach through shelves, and leaving behind the eggs that were meant for someone else.
We’d open up our eggs along the way, piling up the candy and consolidating the paper puzzle pieces that were carefully folded up inside some of the eggs. Once we were able to piece the whole puzzle together, it would reveal a riddle, which would lead us to even more goodies. “April _______ bring May flowers” sent us to check inside all the showers in the house. Did we have any idea how many eggs we were expected to find? No, Mom and Dad had discovered the Easter gift of sleeping in!
That pastime is one of my favorite holiday memories. There’s magic in the spring season itself and in the colors and lively activities that Easter brings. We looked forward to our special egg hunt every year, and it became a tradition of renewal and abundance and working together. At Kennolyn, we know how important traditions are. They guide our camps and other family programs, and kids experience a deeper meaning in the present when these cyclical events also connect them to the past and the future.

The Union Street Easter Parade & Spring Celebration

2017 marks the 26th annual Easter event for San Francisco. Visiting the event is free, but you can expect to pay for food from the many local vendors, for rides, and for other specialized activities. Before the parade, there will be an egg roll and an egg toss. Kids can also look forward to rides and games, face painting, pony rides, and an entertaining view of all the creative parade floats and costumed characters. You could even enter to compete in an Easter bonnet contest! You are guaranteed to find non-stop excitement, but it could be a bit overwhelming to navigate through the expansive event, especially with smaller children.

Since this spring celebration takes place the weekend before Easter, you can plan to attend more than one! At this Recreation and Park Department event, look forward to photos with Easter Bunny (priced at $3), arts and crafts, games, and egg hunts—or “Scramble Areas”—divided by age groups, so the 2-year-olds won’t be searching alongside the 12-year-olds. Egg hunts will start at 11:15 and 11:45 AM.

Kennolyn has designed this event so that all kids can have a fun and successful time spread out across large, open spaces. Count on this event being entirely free—for parking, coffee, snacks, crafts, photos with the Easter Bunny, and the Easter Egg Hunt. The whole family can enjoy the event together on this beautiful, peaceful site in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There are two separate egg hunts at 10:00–11:30 AM and 1:00–2:30 PM. Toddlers will have their own sheltered area to explore for eggs. For kids of other ages, they can explore in different search areas, which will be temporarily closed and replenished as soon as the eggs run out, so the hunt can continue!
Following the Egg Hunts—around 12:00 PM or 3:00 PM—you can join us for tours of our day and resident camp properties. The Easter Egg Hunt is our biggest community-wide tradition, and we hope you’ll join us.
